It’s three in the morning, the witching hour for some; but for me it’s usually the watching hour for television shows. It’s a jungle out there in my neck of the woods. There’s True Blood‘s maenads, werewolves, and werepanthers. There’s The Walking Dead‘s zombies. But it’s Ian Somerhalder playing the vampire rebel Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries who I get to talk to at the dead of the night.

Ian plays the vampire in point to its essence: estranged, cruel, and having persuasive powers potent as poison. Onscreen and through the phone line, he dazzles just the same. He tells me, “Aww, you’re so sweet.” Just imagine the smile on my face upon hearing this. Yes, fangirling is on.

But way before I joined the fang-wagon, Ian was already known as Boone in Lost. Thinking he had everything going for him after the show, he auditioned for the role of Jason Stackhouse in True Blood. Although he grew up in Louisiana where Bon Temps, the setting for True Blood, is located, familiarity with geography still didn’t give him the part. I don’t blame Alan Ball. As far as characters go, Ian doesn’t embody the dirty South, rather he represents the age-old sophisticate. That includes Somerhalder’s ease to Hollywood with a smirk and glare that can stun any onlooker.

As a little kid, Ian already had the glib and gab of a vampire. “I remember, I was so young, I had an imaginary friend named Ian whom my poor family had to deal with probably by a year,” Ian recalls. “Ian liked everything I liked so I asked my mom for this whole pack of gum and then she found me an hour later with my mouth full of it. And my mom said, ‘Wait a minute, Ian. I thought some was for Ian, too.’ And I said, ‘Nope, nope. Ian doesn’t like this kind.’ [laughs] So I used to do things like that. It just kinda made my mom realize that I was meant to be an actor.”

One glimpse at The Vampire Diaries’ badass Damon Salvatore might have given you and Terron R. Moore the impression that the man behind his madness is just as reckless as his brutal alter-ego. But you’d be wrong. Ology flew down to Atlanta and discovered the truth: Ian Somerhalder is trying to save the world.

OLOGY: What’s your Ology?

IAN SOMERHALDER: ConserveOlogy. I’m all about conservation.

If I can ask, what made you get involved and create The Ian Somerhalder Foundation? A lot of people want to create social change, but people don’t always do something about it.

Just being from a really delicate ecosystem—I’m from the Gulf Coast in Louisiana—so it’s literally one of the most delicate ecosystems in the world. It’s so unique and amazing. 45% of all the wetlands in America are in Louisiana where I grew up. If we lose those, we’re screwed. Which we pretty much did, after BP. And that feeling of helplessness… I decided that no one should ever feel that way.

So our organization is all about empowering people through education. And it’s unfortunate, but the education in this country is lacking. There’s a lack of information out there, but the positive spin on that is that there’s so much media and social networking that we can now transfer information so quickly. And it’s really catching on. It’s absolutely awe-inspiring.

WE NEEDED THE VAMPIRE DIARIES SEASON 3 SCOOP SO BADLY we flew down to Atlanta, GA for an interesting brunch with the three most unlikely guys ever willing to share a cup of tea together: baddie Klaus, enemy Damon, and still-human Matt. Before tomorrow night’s thrilling episode, Joseph Morgan, Ian Somerhalder, and Zach Roerig get compelled by Terron R. Moore for spoilers.

OLOGY: Between everything that’s happened between Stefan and Damon with Elena, is there a lesser of two evils?

IAN SOMERAHALDER: I think they’re both pretty screwed up.

JOSEPH MORGAN: Yeah, I mean, in the real world, what each of them has done is unforgivable, isn’t it? Like, for neither of them would you say ‘oh, okay, I can kinda get past that’. [Stefan] did try drive her off a bridge…

ZACH ROERIG: I mean, she’ll always want to keep them around, because she still loved them… but I don’t think she’ll ever trust them again.

JOSEPH: It’s time for her to move on, you know?

IAN: Find another handsome duo… like Batman and Robin!

JOSEPH: I like that!

IAN (to Joseph and Zach): Klaus and Matt!

ZACH: Yogi and Boo-Boo!

JOSEPH: I just can’t decide who’s the better bear for me! (Laughs)

1. Damon Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries)

Played by: Ian Somerhalder

So here he is. The man who’s has deposed Spike from the number one spot. And who could begrudge him? Damon is the new Spike: bad boy? Check. Sharp wit? Check. Willingness to go shirtless? Check? Initially loathed by the show’s heroine but now looking more likely to get in her knickers? Check. Cheekbones? Well… they’re not in the Spike league, but Damon has his fruit machine eyes instead, rolling in ways that seem beyond human abilities.

There’s little doubt that Damon has been a major part in The Vampire Diaries’ success, and Ian Somerhalder has played him like a man gripping onto a buck bronco like his life depends on it. Somerhalder has moaned a bit lately that Damon gets beaten up once too often in the show, and he has a point. So expect some more ass-kicking in future, which can only consolidate his pole position, surely?

Ian is #1
Joseph is #7
Nina is #6
Paul is #15

It seems that the media still don’t get what the buzz about the Vampire Diaries is all about. One reporter from Covington News, a local newspaper, made their way down to Covington on a cold night to see what the fuss was all about.

Judging by her cynical report and sarcasm through most of the article, she thinks we fans are silly and insane for wanting to stand out in the cold (PS: You don’t know COLD until you live in Canada. Trust me!) to possibly see one star.

If anything, the reporter should have left her cynicism at home and embraced what she was about to witness. She should have spent more time talking with the fans and asking them what the fandom was all about. Why “The Vampire Diaries”? Why stand outside for hours on end with the remote hope of seeing one actor? What is so special about “The Vampire Diaries” fandom?

Had I been there, I would have been able to tell her this much; It’s not just about the show or the actors or SmolderHolder (aka Ian Somerhalder). It’s the fans. It’s the sense of family and community. It’s making new friendships that will last a lifetime and beyond. It’s the distinct thrill we get when we do get to meet a cast member. I live all the way up in Canada and do you think I ever thought I would have met the cast? Hell no! I didn’t think it would’ve ever happened. Not in a bagillion years! But it did! I met 8 cast members last year when I travelled to Atlanta for a fan convention. Part of the memories I have are from spending hours on set hoping to catch a glimpse of my favourite show being filmed and also get to meet cast members that I didn’t get to meet at the convention.

So to all those cynical and sarcastic reporters out there who think we are silly fangirls. Look around Twitter when the show is about to air on Thursday nights. Look around at some of the fansites (We take this fansite business seriously. Trust me!). Check out the awards the show has won (Nina Dobrev winning Choice Drama Actress after being the first ever write-in on the People’s Choice Awards ballot)! Hang out at a fan convention and witness the amazing energy of the fans. Hang out again on set and spend more time talking to the fans to understand better what it really is all about.

To read up about my experience on meeting Ian Somerhalder, please read here.

Ian Somerhalder told me at the People’s Choice Awards that he’d just shot a Vampire Diaries scene where Damon “wakes up naked with another woman who is a hot vampire.” Might this be Katherine? Nina Dobrev (Elena/Katherine) hints, “I can’t say whether or not I’m in that scene, but it is a character fans are familiar with and Elena will definitely have an opinion on it.”
