In memoriam…
Stefan’s not the only one keeping a list of dead people — we are, too. These days, it seems everyone on “The Vampire Diaries” has blood on their hands. With the ghost-themed Halloween episode upon us, we figured now was a good time to look back on the characters we’ve loved and lost over the last few years of Thursday night ripping and staking and heart-snatching.

So you’ve heard the buzz, your interest is tickled and you’re ready to take the plunge into a new show. What’s that? You don’t have time to catch up on multiple seasons?
Have no fear, AOL TV is here. We’ve been spotlighting five episodes from some of the best scripted comedies and dramas on TV that you need to see before jumping into the new season this fall.
Up now? The Vampire Diaries
In the grand tradition of high school shows before it (including co-creator Kevin Williamson’s own ‘Dawson’s Creek’), ‘The Vampire Diaries’ features one epic love triangle. Our 17-year-old heroine Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and her troubled little brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) live in Mystic Falls, Virginia with their Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) after the tragic death of their parents. As is wont to happen on The CW, Elena falls for the heartthrob new kid in town, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). One problem — he’s a vampire (and has been stuck at 17 years old since 1864), and so is his evil older brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder).
While Stefan is the typical nice guy that teen daydreams are made of, the elder Salvatore is the complete opposite — a sexy bad boy, though still unfortunately hung up on the hottie who turned him and his bro into vampires in the 19th century. Did we mention that said hottie looks identical to Elena? Her name’s Katherine, and it turns out Mystic Falls isn’t the sleepy little town we previously thought. It’s got a rich supernatural heritage, and the bloodlines of the town’s original founders run deep.
Vampires aren’t the only otherworldly beings who made their way to Virginia — Elena’s best friend, Bonnie (Katerina Graham), comes from a long line of witches, and school friend Tyler (Michael Trevino) is descended from werewolves. Though Elena does have BFFs who are human like her — Caroline (Candice Accola) and Matt (Zach Roerig). During Season 1, doppelganger Katherine causes the most trouble, while Season 2 deals with some complicated werewolf- and vampire-related mythology you’d usually expect to see on Syfy — not a teen soap.
But ‘The Vampire Diaries’ isn’t your typical teen drama. After its 2009 debut, it quickly became one of the most fast-paced, well-written shows on TV. The storylines are intricate and move fast, the dialogue is sharp and funny, and the acting is probably the best The CW has ever seen. Don’t believe me? Check out these five episodes carefully selected from the first two seasons and then try to tell me you’re not hooked. (Although I highly, highly recommend watching more like 10 to 15 episodes. Choosing just five was a near-impossible task.)

Early in The Vampire Diaries, Caroline was the bitch. There’s no other way to put it. But as the rookie season progressed, something interesting happened with Caroline, who is played by Candice Accola.
Over time, Caroline became a three-dimensional, even sympathetic character. When she behaved in a bitchy way, viewers started to feel sorry for her, rather than despising her.
We have to assume the writers on The Vampire Diaries saw something in Accola that allowed this gradual transformation to occur.
“Well, thank you so much, first and foremost,” said Accola, who is back with all the main cast members for the second season of The Vampire Diaries, beginning Thursday, Sept. 9 on CW and A. “To start the story it had to be pretty simple, but as the season unfolded the layers came out.”
Accola, 23, said she thought back to her own high school days when endeavouring to get inside Caroline’s head.
“Everyone knows girls who are like Caroline was when we met her in the pilot,” Accola said. “But with people like that, it usually is coming from an insecure, defensive place. “You try to belittle someone else to make yourself feel better. Even the nicest of the nice with the biggest hearts, we all have a little bit of that in us. It’s a very human characteristic.”
But Caroline is integral to The Vampire Diaries not only for her emotional humanity, but also for her physical humanity.
“Especially with all the supernatural elements of the show, my interpretation of what the writers did with Caroline was to give the audience someone to relate to in a very human way,” Accola said.
“So I don’t know what the writers initially intended, but it was lovely to go on that journey. And it definitely reminded me of my own experiences as a high schooler, foot in mouth, not knowing who you are and trying to be someone. You know everything that you don’t want, but it’s hard to find what you do want. Even as a young woman in my 20s, there’s a lot of relatability to that.”
Notwithstanding some previous episodic work, the role of Caroline on The Vampire Diaries represents Accola’s first full-time gig on a TV show. While learning a lot about the craft as she goes along, Accola also appreciates that she just happens to be on a show that has achieved the rare combination of good ratings and critical success.
“In season two, there are some awesome plot lines, the audience is going to be so excited,” Accola said. “For Caroline, she’s searching to figure out who she is and where she fits, in this town and in everyone’s life. And there are some obstacles thrown in front of her.
“What’s funny about this show is, everyone was either quick to jump on board or quick to write it off, because it fed into the pop-culture phenomenon that is vampires right now. But it’s not just about vampires. I’ve been stopped more by adults than by younger peers or teens.”

“The Vampire Diaries” and “House” are among the newest titles arriving on the Blu-ray high definition format this week.
“The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season” (Warner Brothers, 2009-10, $69.97) is another in the growing list of TV shows and movies that have sparked something of a pop vampire craze. Many of these productions attempt to show that vampires are just like anyone else, with the exception of being cursed with a bloodlust.
This one takes place in the town of Mystic Falls, where teenager Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrey) is trying to put her life back together after the death of her parents. She finds comfort in the friendship with a new student, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Unknown to her, Stefan is a vampire who is trying hard to keep his desires under control.
She eventually discovers the truth when Stefan’s evil brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) arrives in town. Damon has no problem with his vampire ways and is intent on causing plenty of trouble while claiming Elena for himself. The battle is on between the two brothers.
The show is based on a series of books by L.J. Smith. Among the extras are deleted scenes, a gag reel and featurettes “Into Mystic Falls” and “A New Breed of Vampires.” The four-disc set includes 22 episodes.
The site of Canal + also added 6 mini videos to present the characters and the story they’re sharing.
