Ian Somerhalder chats with New York Post’s Popwrap about how he’s being “thrown for a loop”, along with the rest of us, as Damon continues to evolve taking Ian into territory he hadn’t quite expected to travel with this character – and he likes it! Check it out:
PopWrap: First of all, congrats on an amazing episode last week. What did you make of Damon’s closing breakdown?
Ian Somerhalder: Aw, thanks man. It was a great one. The thing is that I am as confused as an actor as Damon is as an individual by virtue of the fact that he is such a phenomenally different character than I ever anticipated or planned on him being. Which is great because when it throws him for a loop, it throws me for a loop, so I’m constantly being kept on my toes.
PW: Yea, he does seem to be having a bit of a crisis right now.
Ian: And we all have those cliché man’s existential crisis moments – goodness, as a young man in my twenties, I was in search of finding an answer for it. He truly is experiencing, more than likely, for the first time in 150 years how this whole “feeling” thing works. It is really difficult to grapple with.PW: I’d imagine that delivering that emotional monologue also took quite a bit out of you.
Ian: That was a very cathartic few hours not only for Damon, but also for me. Sometimes those types of scenes are really, really interesting because they come from a place deep within yourself. You are forced to put yourself through what that character is going through, so there’s an interesting connection there for an actor. This little journey that senior Damon is on is one to be reckoned with. He’s asking real serious questions that we’ve all asked ourselves. It just happens to be coming from a person who is 160 plus years old [laughs].

Poor Damon. Just like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, Damon has found (or is finding) his heart. Of course, the Tin Man didn’t kill anyone when he got up close and personal with his emotions – classic ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ scenario for someone in last week’s episode. However, Ian Somerhalder isn’t too torn up about it, saying, “Sometimes you just have to eat people.”
TVLine caught up with Ian to find out what’s in store for the increasingly emotional vampire, “This whole ‘feeling thing’ is really starting to weigh on Damon and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for him to quell those feelings. That frustration, compounded with the danger and problematic nature of having this werewolf thing and the Klaus thing — there are a lot of odds stacked against him.”
What’s worse than having feelings? Having feelings for Elena – sweet, sexy, very mortal Elena. “The fact that Elena, this beautiful creature that he just adores, could fall to another entity and he has no control over it, really pisses him off,” Ian say, “He has to protect what he loves, and he and Stefan will come together and make this Klaus thing happen.”

Is The Vampire Diaries’ Damon Salvatore getting soft?
Ordinarily, we would have expected bad boy Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to move in on Elena (Nina Dobrev) while her true love — and Damon’s brother — Stefan (Paul Wesley) was locked away in a tomb. So why didn’t he?
On the set of The Vampire Diaries: What the show will — and won’t — take from the books
“There is a bit of a bonding moment that’s happening with those two,” Somerhalder told TVGuide.com during our visit to the set. “One would think … that Damon is flying high and really ecstatic about that. Maybe six months ago, yes, he would be over the moon, but I don’t think so anymore.”

During this time of the year, it is always important to try and remember that in the midst of all the craziness, sometimes it is important to sit back, relax, and be grateful.for everything you have. Of course, this isn’t always easy when you have a few dozen Christmas gifts to pick up and only a limited amount of time to do so.In order to help keep up in the spirit of the holidays, we have this friendly reminder from “The Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder on the matter. Here’s what he had to post recently on his Twitter page:
“up and at them- just a few more days till relaxation people.Let’s not get caught up the the commercial,consumer-based awesomeness of the holidays but the calming, introspective and family element of it.Breaks my heart to see parents scrounging&going into debt!Kids-appreciate your time with family!!! I just heard a small girl in the elevator yelling at her mom about her x-mas list… WTF.Let’s be happy to be alive”

On last week’s episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” Stefan (Paul Wesley) got stuck in the church tomb with Katherine (Nina Dobrev) after an instinctive move to save Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) from becoming her personal blood fountain.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) promised to get Stefan out of there – but Katherine doubts he’s sincere. She warns Stefan that asking Damon to keep an eye on Elena may have been a huge mistake.
So what is Damon’s priority – saving his brother, or moving in on his brother’s girlfriend? I sat down with Somerhalder on the set in Atlanta to find out just where Damon’s head is now that Stefan is temporarily out of the picture.
“Katherine has a point,” Somerhalder admits. “She’s a total bitch, but she definitely has a point. And by virtue of that point, which is basically ‘hey, you just gave him what he’s always wanted,’ the thing is, though… Damon genuinely wants to get his brother out of the tomb.”

This Thursday’s (Dec. 9) episode of “The Vampire Diaries” is one of the most highly buzzed-about episodes in the course of the series.
In “By the Light of the Moon,” Tyler Lockwood, Mystic Falls’ resident bully with a heart of gold, transforms into a werewolf in an excruciating scene that took two days to shoot.
If you’re anything like us, you’re anticipating Mystic Falls’ next full moon with an unsettling blend of excitement and dread. We couldn’t wait to find out what happens, so Zap2it hit the show’s Atlanta set this week — with our shaky flip video camera in tow — to get the scoop from the cast.
There is one thing that everyone from Michael Trevino’s co-stars to showrunners Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec agreed on unanimously: this is Trevino’s episode to shine, and it’s a story that’s been well-earned….
Michael Trevino
I chatted with Trevino about his character’s journey from the resident one-dimensional bully to the emotionally layered Tyler we’ll see on screen this week.
“Last year, Tyler would show up, get into a fight, and then leave for a few episodes,” Trevino says. While we’re sure those choreographed brawl scenes had their merits, this season, he gets to stretch the limits of his talent and training as an actor….
Candice Accola
He was also joined on set by co-star Candice Accola.
“It was a very beautiful, painfully beautiful day at work,” she says. “You’d walk on set and the tone was set. Everyone was there to work. It was very serious. Everything that he was doing was so beautiful, creatively, that it was a very intense two days. They put him through the ringer. He went for it, he went there, and I think it’s going to make for a great, shining moment for Trevino. I think it’s a great episode for him.”…
Ian Somerhalder
Ian Somerhalder says that the heart of Tyler’s story is whether or not he can step up, accept his fate, and do what it takes to protect his home and his family. “Or what’s left of his family, the poor guy,” Somerhalder adds. “We killed his dad, we killed his uncle. I think we need to figure out, first of all, what Tyler wants. My guess, hopefully, is that he realizes that this is his home. This is where it all started and where it should end.”
