It’s three in the morning, the witching hour for some; but for me it’s usually the watching hour for television shows. It’s a jungle out there in my neck of the woods. There’s True Blood‘s maenads, werewolves, and werepanthers. There’s The Walking Dead‘s zombies. But it’s Ian Somerhalder playing the vampire rebel Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries who I get to talk to at the dead of the night.
Ian plays the vampire in point to its essence: estranged, cruel, and having persuasive powers potent as poison. Onscreen and through the phone line, he dazzles just the same. He tells me, “Aww, you’re so sweet.” Just imagine the smile on my face upon hearing this. Yes, fangirling is on.
But way before I joined the fang-wagon, Ian was already known as Boone in Lost. Thinking he had everything going for him after the show, he auditioned for the role of Jason Stackhouse in True Blood. Although he grew up in Louisiana where Bon Temps, the setting for True Blood, is located, familiarity with geography still didn’t give him the part. I don’t blame Alan Ball. As far as characters go, Ian doesn’t embody the dirty South, rather he represents the age-old sophisticate. That includes Somerhalder’s ease to Hollywood with a smirk and glare that can stun any onlooker.
As a little kid, Ian already had the glib and gab of a vampire. “I remember, I was so young, I had an imaginary friend named Ian whom my poor family had to deal with probably by a year,” Ian recalls. “Ian liked everything I liked so I asked my mom for this whole pack of gum and then she found me an hour later with my mouth full of it. And my mom said, ‘Wait a minute, Ian. I thought some was for Ian, too.’ And I said, ‘Nope, nope. Ian doesn’t like this kind.’ [laughs] So I used to do things like that. It just kinda made my mom realize that I was meant to be an actor.”

Dobrev Diaries“Nina is the girl next door, but at the same time she’s enviably gorgeous and has really come into her own, fashion-wise,” says Danielle Nussbaum, entertainment editor of Teen Vogue (which put Dobrev on the April cover). “She topped all the best- dressed lists rocking that uber-glam red Donna Karan dress at the Emmys, and her street style is cool and casual. Also, it helps that she’s accessible. She tweets [Dobrev has more than 1 million followers], she talks to fans and she is genuinely BFF with her castmates. Nina’s the friend you want and the friend you’d want to be.”
She’s got the boyfriend all the girls want as well— Dobrev and co-star Ian Somerhalder, who plays vampire Damon Salvatore, came out as a couple on that same Emmy red carpet.
On her way to the Georgia-based set where Vampire Diaries is filming its third season, Dobrev sounds happy if a little tired. “We’ll be working till 5 or 6 this morning, basically till the sun comes up,” she says. Playing both Elena, the show’s starry-eyed orphan protagonist, and Katherine, Elena’s Civil War-era vampire doppelgänger, means that Dobrev pulls double duty at work. Is that fair? “Not everything in life is fair,” she says, “but it keeps me on my toes.”

Daniel Gillies has said that Elijah is in love with Elena on The Vampire Diaries.
The 35-year-old revealed that he hopes the Original vampire will express his feelings for Elena (Nina Dobrev) at some point on the CW series.
“I know it’s a little obvious in the world of Vampire Diaries, where everyone falls in love with Elena, but I agree that Elijah sees something beautiful in her,” Gillies told The Insider.
“I would love for him to express that to her before he goes,” he continued. “I feel like Elijah would be most drawn to her because she’s living a better life than people who’ve lived for centuries longer.
“I think that’s the sort of thing he’s attracted to,” Gillies insisted. “Even it was just a moment, I’d love to see them share something – but I think it should be more.”
Gillies recently returned to the CW series after he was resurrected by Damon (Ian Somerhalder).
Joseph Morgan, who plays Klaus, said in December that he would love to see a battle between his character and Elijah.
The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.

One glimpse at The Vampire Diaries’ badass Damon Salvatore might have given you and Terron R. Moore the impression that the man behind his madness is just as reckless as his brutal alter-ego. But you’d be wrong. Ology flew down to Atlanta and discovered the truth: Ian Somerhalder is trying to save the world.
OLOGY: What’s your Ology?
IAN SOMERHALDER: ConserveOlogy. I’m all about conservation.
If I can ask, what made you get involved and create The Ian Somerhalder Foundation? A lot of people want to create social change, but people don’t always do something about it.
Just being from a really delicate ecosystem—I’m from the Gulf Coast in Louisiana—so it’s literally one of the most delicate ecosystems in the world. It’s so unique and amazing. 45% of all the wetlands in America are in Louisiana where I grew up. If we lose those, we’re screwed. Which we pretty much did, after BP. And that feeling of helplessness… I decided that no one should ever feel that way.So our organization is all about empowering people through education. And it’s unfortunate, but the education in this country is lacking. There’s a lack of information out there, but the positive spin on that is that there’s so much media and social networking that we can now transfer information so quickly. And it’s really catching on. It’s absolutely awe-inspiring.

Q. Why were you drawn in to playing Meredith on “The Vampire Diaries?” What about her made you want to portray this character?
A. Just getting to be on the show alone was a draw enough, but as I have gotten to know this character more, I have just really start to love her more and more. She’s smart, sharp, strong and straight forward. I love getting to portray females that have a backbone
Q. What hints can you give us about Meredith’s motives regarding Alaric – do you think she is a danger to him, as Damon suspects?
A. That I can not say, but I can say for the sake of Alaric’s tragic love track record, I hope she turns out to be good for him and this lasts for a little bit.
Q. Are there any hints that Meredith Fell is somehow related to Logan Fell, from Season 1 and what her background is?
A. Same last name, same blood line. She comes from a long line of founders.

The last episode of Vampire Diaries served up another one of the show’s signature shockers with the heart-stopping (and removing) reveal that Damon had awoken Elijah!
But unlike many of the show’s other OMG moments, this one remained unspoiled by the internet until it actually aired! A fact that star Daniel Gillies is still astounded by.
That was just one of the things I discussed with Daniel in advance of tonight’s big Elijah episode. I also found out what his character’s mindset is when it comes to his brother Klaus, The Salvatore brothers and that delectable Elena Gilbert!
Insider.com: Were you surprised that the reveal of Elijah’s return stayed secret until the episode actually aired?
Daniel Gillies: I was – especially with today’s online media. We filmed so much in the studio, but one day Ian [Somerhalder], Paul [Wesley], Joseph [Morgan] and myself filmed a scene in the middle of an alley and there were crowds of people watching. They all saw me. There was no hiding it. At one point, the director even screamed “Elijah go back to first position!” It’s incredible to me that those people didn’t Tweet about it. I thought it would be ruined for sure.

“Vampire Diaries” is steaming up the CW tonight with a new episode. Joseph Morgan’s character Klaus will have an icy reunion with a fellow “original vampire” named Finn, played by Casper Zafer. Now, there’s been some gossip amongst fans that Casper and Joseph hate each other as much as their characters.
However, it couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, Joseph wanted to set the record straight. “Casper‘s commanding presence and rugged charm onscreen were matched only by his off-screen toilet humor. He’s a hell of a guy,” he says.

“What I can tell you is my character has been developed this relationship with his siblings, which is founded on a lie,” Morgan said. “Elijah has believed their mother was killed by their father, when it was Klaus. Elijah is intrigued to learn the truth. There will be a showdown, plus he’s coming with idea of vengeance. It’s going to be pretty dramatic.”
Morgan praised the writing, which supplies motives for the characters. Morgan wouldn’t say whether Eli forgives Klaus or seeks vengeance.
